Lake Balboa, California

The View from My Bicycle

By Marianne Schwab | Best Travel Deals Tips Blog

I love my sunset bike rides around Lake Balboa in California. The views from my bicycle might surprise you since it's located in the middle of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles.

Depending on what time of the day I'm riding my bike around Lake Balboa, in addition to the scenery I often spot a lot of wild life including cotton tailed bunny rabbits, herons, mallard ducks, and I have even seen a coyote at high noon, not to mention lots of geckos. You can faintly see a family of ducks taking a sunset swim in the photo above.

Lake Balboa is located in The Anthony C. Beilenson Park (formerly Balboa Park) and the lake has 27 acres filled with water from the Tillman Water Reclamation Plant. The bike path winds through the park from east to west and also circles the parameter of the park and a couple of golf courses. During the spring, Japanese cherry blossom trees located in the park and around Lake Balboa are in full bloom.

Cycling has become a new passion for me since I rediscovered how much fun it is to ride a bike last summer. Nothing like spending a day in Yosemite National Park with my nephew, Tyler, and niece, Alexis, on a bike cycling to water falls and spots like Mirror Lake to reignite a childhood love of bike riding. Just a few weeks after that day in Yosemite, I purchased a hybrid Diamondback Insight bicycle and now have cycled over 1750 miles on that bike in about eleven months. Most of the miles have been cycled around Lake Balboa in California which is not far from my home and an occasional ride along the beach bike path through Manhattan Beach.
