Here are some hotel bed bugs statistics on the top ten cities in the U.S. that have the biggest issues with these nasty little critters. Bed bug infestation complaints in the United States have been on the rise and are expected to continue to increase if drastic preventative measures are not taken. 1. New York, New York

  • Bedbug infestations are a growing problem in New York City, with infestations rising five-fold in the 12 months to June 2010, according to pest control company Assured Environments. Locations including a movie theater, a Victoria's Secret lingerie store and clothes retailer Abercrombie & Fitch all reporting infestations in 2010.

  • There have been 12,768 bed bug complaints in New York City from 2009-2010.

  • The famous Waldorf Astoria hotel has been the subject of several lawsuits regarding alleged reports of hotel bed bugs.

  • Bed bugs have caused several public schools to close as well as the Time Building and The Empire State Building.

  • Former U.S. President Bill Clinton has battled an outbreak at his Harlem office.

  • Singer Norah Jones is undergoing a bedbug lawsuit due to an outbreak during construction in her Brooklyn home.





  • 2. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

  • Philadelphia’s IRS building had an infestation in April 2010.

  • Residents of Philadelphia have gone as far as renovating entire apartments to rid their homes of bed bugs.

  • The city does not keep track of reported bed bug calls, but exterminators in the area have noticed an extreme increase in calls over the past 2 years.



  • 3. Detroit, Michigan

  • Detroit Metropolitan Landlord Association pays between $20,000 and $100,000 to stop infestations in a single apartment building.

  • In August 2010, a luxury, high-rise apartment building in downtown Detroit was infested with bed bugs and charged $150 per tenant for extermination.

  • Mail delivery to several buildings was put on hold to stop the spread of bed bugs in September 2010.

    4. Cincinnati, Ohio

  • Cincinnati has the highest number of bed bug service calls in Ohio.

  • Government Officials in Cincinnati are recommending residents use the pesticide “Propoxur” despite its toxicity to children.



  • 5. Chicago, Illinois

  • The First Bed Bug University North American Summit featuring 14 of the nation's leading bedbug experts met in Chicago.

  • 80-90% of all complaints to Chicago’s Pest Control are in reference to bed bugs.

  • The J.P Morgan Chase building in Chicago was closed due to an infestation.







  • 6. Denver,Colorado

  • Bed bugs were found in library books loaned from the Denver Public Library, leading the library to destroy rare books.

  • The Department of Public Health attributes the bed bug epidemic in Denver to the amount of tourists the city sees on a weekly basis.



  • 7. Columbus, Ohio

  • Local hospitals in Columbus are creating in-house task forces to prevent bed bug infestations.

  • Bed bug infestations in Columbus have tripled in the past 2 years.


  • 8. Dayton, Ohio

  • In Dayton, bedbugs have become big business, with some pest control firms having bedbug service go from less than $100 a month to more than $10,000 a month in business.

  • The bed bug problem in Dayton proves that bed bugs are back and can pop up anywhere; the bed bug problems in this city outpace markets of far greater size despite their having a fraction of the population and typically fewer travelers and hotels.



  • 9. Washington, D.C.

  • The bed bug infestations in Washington, D.C. are showing up on a scale that has not been seen since World War II.

  • Bed bugs were found in the prestigious dormitories of George Washington University.



  • 10. Los Angeles, California

  • L.A. County officials have most recently recorded about 55 reports per month of area bed bug citings.

  • Bed bugs have been found in high-end retailers on Rodeo Drive.

  • Lower-income areas in Los Angeles and parts of the San Fernando Valley are the hardest hit.

  • Bed bugs have shown up in upscale Beverly Hills and homes and apartments in more than two dozen Southland communities, according to the LA Country Department of Public Health.
