Lourmarin, France - a Charming Village

By Marianne Schwab | Best Travel Deals Tips Blog

Lourmarin is located in the French region of Provence and classified as one of the "most beautiful villages in France." Extremely picturesque, the village is a tourist magnet as it is nestled in the middle of vineyards, olive groves and almond trees.

The view of the village above was taken from inside the Chateau de Lourmarin overlooking this tiny town.

The Chateau de Lourmarin is actually a medieval castle that was restored in 1920, but first built in the 12th century and later rebuilt by the Agoult family between 1479 and 1545 on the foundations of the earlier castle. When you visit, don't miss taking a tour since the chateau is open to the public and includes furnished apartments, a library, and an amazing staircase. You'll want to experience every drafty room.

This tiny village oozes charm from every narrow cobblestone street and you'll love the Mediterranean style architecture. I couldn't resist the irony of this scene with an older villager working on his laptop in the street outside his home - 15th century meets 21st century.

There are several shops, including souvenir shops, antiques, art galleries and clothing boutiques, but my favorites involve the French food at boulangeries and patisseries.

There are also a few terrace cafés around the cobblestone junction in the heart of the town or pick up a French pastry to go like I did from the assortment above.

There's so much more to France than Paris and as you can see, Lourmarin, one of the Luberon villages of France, is enchanting. Also while you're in Provence, take a short drive over to the hilltop village of Roussillon famous for its magnificent red cliffs and ochre quarries.

Note: Lourmarin is located at the entrance of the vale dug by the Aiguebrun stream which separates the small from the great Luberon mounts, only access between the North and the South sides of the mountain.
