Daxu is a quaint 1000 year old village located about 14 miles Southwest of Guilin City in China. The Guilin region along the Li River is the picturesque subject of many paintings from China. In fact, it's what I think most people think of when they think of Chinese art. Stroll the streets of Daxu village and you'll see the work of some of China's talented artists.
Daxu village is the perfect place for China's artists with its inspiring street scenes and breath taking landscapes. These artists aren't selling mass produced paintings as seen in so many tourist spots in China, but authentic, original art painted the way the artist sees the world around him.
I met this artist who was very unique in his artistic interpretation of the local life. He had a touch of whimsy in his paintings and one of my regrets is not purchasing one of his unique works of art. I had already purchased four paintings from local artists at this point in my trip to China so was maxed out by the time I came across his simple art gallery.
You can take a closer look at some of the paintings he was displaying in his small gallery. I love the painting of the 400 year old Longevity Bridge that's located just a few hundred feet from the front door of his shop. He truly is inspired by his surroundings and I think has a flavor of Salvadore Dali in his style that I find whimsical.
Local art is one of the few souvenirs I purchase when I travel. I love that it truly supports the local economy of the area I'm visiting and the paintings are wonderful reminders of my travels that I see every day in my home.
