Daxu Village: Longevity Bridge

400 Year Old Bridge in Southern China

By Marianne Schwab | Best Travel Deals Tips Blog

Drive about 14 miles Southwest of Guilin City in China and you'll find Daxu, a quaint 1000 year old village. The main street in Daxu is about one mile long, paved in huge bluestone bricks that have been worn smooth by hundreds of years of traffic and is lined with shop fronts of local merchants.

Most of the buildings in Daxu date back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) and you'll find many of the local residents live in apartments or living areas located behind the retail spaces.

One of the main features of the town is the Longevity (Wanshou) Bridge that was built during the Ming Dynasty with its single stone arch.

When you walk across the bridge, you'll see some breathtaking views of the Li River and the Millstone Mountain located on the other side of the River.

It may seem like a simple act, but it was actually a very moving and emotional experience walking across the Longevity Bridge that connects the residents of this ancient village with a "life" that has spanned four centuries.

Just as we exited the Longevity Bridge, we made our way to a meadow by the Li River and met a local villager and his horse and colt. You can see horses grazing in the meadow by the river bank in the photo above. It was a misty and tranquil setting that calms me even today when I look at photos of my visit to this 1000 year old village in Southern China.

A local Daxu Village artist was able to capture the perspective of this bridge better with his paintbrush than I could with my camera lens. Perhaps a high vantage point that was not available to me was available to him, but I love the above artistic depiction of the Longevity Bridge that I found in a small art gallery just steps away from its 400 -year-old stairs.

Additional links to great places to visit in this country are located in the right column where you can explore more of my adventures in China.
